People who travel to Japan might be a little frustrated that there aren't many public garbage cans in cities, especially because there are so many vending machines. But the explanation for this is actually pretty interesting. After a domestic terrorist strike in 1995, numerous cities took away their public trash cans. But it's not really a big deal since people in Japan don't litter, so it's not a big deal.
