Japanese Life Rules That Might Seem Foreign To Visitors

Drinking Soup From A Bowl In Japan

This is different from most customs in the West. In Japan, it's fine to drink your soup from a bowl, and it's even better to do so when the soup is almost gone. Travelers don't have to worry about drinking soup straight from the bowl, which is a good thing because there will be many times when soup is part of the meal.

Most meals in Japan come with some kind of broth or soup, and it's considered disrespectful not to pick up the bowl and sip it at some time throughout the meal.
