In Japan, it's not unusual to never go to a friend's house. This is because people in Japan cherish their privacy very highly and think of their houses as private spaces. When people in Japan get out with friends, they normally just go out and do stuff in public. This could be one reason why Japanese cities have so many public areas, such bars and karaoke bars.

If you're going to Japan and a friend doesn't invite you inside their home, you should also keep this in mind. It's just not as common in Japan as it is in the rest of the world.
