Rare Jellyfish Red Sprite Lightning Looks Like an Alien Invasion

Here is a picture of a rare and beautiful weather event. This jellyfish, called red sprite lightning, was detected in the sky between 30 and 90 kilometers. It definitely looks like something out of a science fiction movie. When strong lightning hits, jellyfish sprites can happen. They are incredibly short, bright, and complex-looking electric discharges. Instead of going to the ground, the electrical charge is discharged into the air, which is interesting.

Scientists think that these strange sprites happen when a positive bolt of lightning hits the ground under a thunderstorm. This picture was captured near the border between Oklahoma and Texas in the south in October 2020.
