One of the most obvious signs that someone is an American tourist is that they don't know how to use the metric system. It's very clear that most countries in the world employ the metric system, with only three not doing so. Myanmar and Liberia also use the imperial system, but there are a lot more American tourists than tourists from those nations, thus it's more likely that they are American.
