Tall white socks used to be highly popular, especially with American tourists, but they aren't as popular anymore. This was one of the easiest ways to spot an American tourist when I was going abroad because no one else really tried to look like this. It's not clear why this got popular in the US or why it became something that travelers are known for.

If you don't want to make one of the biggest fashion mistakes that American tourists make, don't wear really tall white socks. They can be knee-length or even only mid-calf, which is already excessively long.
