The Rarely-Seen Side of Jonathan Scott and the Property Brothers

Purposely Showing Homes Out of the Participants' Budgets

There is a grim undertone to every episode of this well-known HGTV show. The show seems harmless enough, with twin brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott fixing up homes for people who want to buy them. But the show's formula of disappointments and and hidden fees makes people feel scared and uneasy long after the credits roll. The brothers trick buyers into thinking they can afford their dream home by making them think they can afford it, but then they quickly let them down by saying it's out of their price range.

What is the point of this disappointment? It could be a technique to make the presentation more exciting and dramatic, but it only messes with the participants' feelings.
