Unique Ramadan Traditions From Across the World

Colorful Lanterns Are a Must

One thing you would notice if you went to Egypt during Ramadan is that the streets would be filled with colorful lanterns. These lanterns are found all over the world, but Egypt is known for its "fanous." This tradition has been going on for hundreds of years, and it is thought that the first lantern was put outside an Egyptian home during the Fatimid Empire, which lasted from 953 to 975.

Now, it's a big part of Ramadan for Muslims to decorate the outside of their homes with as many of these colorful lanterns as they can. Some streets are even covered in them.
