The crescent moon is a big part of Ramadan. It marks the start and end of the month, and people all over the world celebrate when they see it in the sky. In South Africa, they take these moon sightings even more seriously. They have their own "moon watchers" or "maan kykers" who stand at important peaks in the country and look for the crescent moon.

But you can't just choose to be a moon watcher. The South Africa's Muslim Judicial Council decides who is worthy of this position.
